“Critical Thinking: The Soul of Communication”
Read the excerpt below, taken from Pearson’s TalentLens website, and respond in writing to this prompt. How do you see communication and critical thinking impacting your future role as a leader in the workplace. (150-200 words)
I believe communication and critical thinking is crucial in impacting my future role as a leader in the workplace.
Currently, the cost of poor communications in organisations is very high and the cost of it in the US and UK business was estimated at US$37 billion as stated in a 2008 whitepaper by IDC. This is a lot of money lost by businesses due to lack of effective communication. I believe that the cost of effective communication can be reduced and eventually minimised if leaders implement effective communication skills to their organisations.
Another whitepaper from the Project Management Institute's Pulse research reveals that the most crucial success factor in project management is effective communications to all the stakeholders. With this information, leaders should know the importance of effective communication. As a future leader in the workplace, I will improve my effective communication so that I will be able to effectively communicate with others.
Most communications skill training only covers the superficial parts of the communication process, therefore fails to be effective. Critical thinking is what makes communication successful as it provides a meaningful exchange of information. Critical thinking equips leaders and managers to think rationally, provide sound reasoning and develop a coherent argument. As a future leader, I want my critical thinking to be excellent so I can communicate with my organisation effectively.
In conclusion, as my future role as a leader in the workplace, I understand the importance of critical thinking in order to effectively communicate with people. By incorporating these traits, I believe that I will be improving my effective communication and reduce the cost of poor communication and misunderstandings in the future.
