Summary Draft 1- Introducing Newoil

According to Liu, V. (2020, March 4). Parliament: S'Pore looks to create Newoil by transforming waste plastic into alternative fuel. The Straits Times. Singapore studies creating Newoil by converting waste plastic into alternative fuel. Newoil will give discarded plastic new purpose in the form of pyrolysis oil as Singapore faces difficulties in managing its mountain of plastic waste as only 4 per cent of the 949,300 tonnes of it has been recycled in 2018. Currently, only mechanical recycling and chemical recycling are used to recycle plastic. Packaging waste has high generation and low recycling rate. As the amount increases, Singapore needs to find ways to manage packaging waste more sustainably. National Environment Agency will initiate a deposit refund scheme to encourage recycling for beverage containers. If Newoil is successful, Singapore will be closer to a zero-waste nation and a low-carbon economy. This is an effort to lengthen the lifespan of Semakau Landfill which may be full by 2035. These are initiatives to turn every waste problem into an opportunity.
