Summary Draft 2 - Introducing Newoil
In the article “Parliament:Singapore looks to create Newoil by transforming waste plastic into alternative fuel,” Liu.V highlights how Singapore struggles to manage its waste, discussing the different methods of recycling waste to move closer towards being a zero-waste nation.
The article notes that
Singapore wants to generate Newoil, a chemical process which transforms plastic
waste into pyrolysis oil- a potential replacement for the fossil fuel
petroleum.
To improve the recycling rate
of packaging waste, National Environment Agency will implement deposit refund scheme
by 2022 to motivate consumers to return used beverage containers such as PET
bottles and receive reimbursement.
To lessen the amount of waste
sent to Semakau Landfill, producers and retailers of packaged products need to record
and submit the amount of packaging used to National Environment Agency. Also,
they need to plan how to reduce, reuse and recycle the packaging waste.
Newsand is processed construction
material made of incineration waste that can build roads. It will go on trial
and if successful, it reduces incineration waste.
The article mentions Singapore
are developing e-waste recycling capabilities as three new facilities expected
to process more than 50,000 tonnes of e-waste per year when fully functional.
By 2024, premises that
contribute large amounts of food waste will be required by law to segregate the
waste for treatment to improve its recycling rate.
Although the article mentions
Newoil, it briefly explained on Newoil and instead, it focused on Singapore’s Resource
Sustainability Act which tackles three key waste streams: electronic, food and
packaging.
